Group A Heats Up After Hungary Win

Hungary head coach Stefan Svitek
Stefan Svitek's side kept their hopes alive in EuroBasket Women Qualification Round Group A.

There promises to be more twists and turns in Group A after Hungary avoided a potential banana skin by comfortably beating winless Portugal 73-53 to breathe further life into their challenge.

With both Belarus and Ukraine also fighting it out to advance, three certainly won't go into two and therefore it was essential for Stefan Svitek and his team to do what was necessary and secure the road win everyone was pretty much expecting.

Allie Quigley has been worth her weight in gold since pulling on a Hungary vest for the first time this summer and her superb form continued with another impressive all-action line of 23 points, eight rebounds, four assists and five steals.

The visitors put serious daylight between themselves and their hosts during the second quarter which they won 20-9 to go up by 18 points at the break and that effectively killed off any real hope Portugal had of causing an upset and belatedly registering a first success.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Portugal vs. Hungary

Hungary coach Stefan Svitek:
"We knew that it would be a difficult game for us but we managed to decide the game in the first half. We were very aggressive and we got a 20 point lead at half time. We were tired in the second half, just like Portugal, but the game was already decided."

Hungary player Alexandria Quigley:
"We knew that Portugal was getting better from game to game. We knew that it was going to be a hard game but what matters is that in the end we won and we are happy for that."

Portugal coach Ricardo Vasconcelos:
"Hungary played a really physical game, hard on defense which allowed them to intimidate us. This resulted in a low shooting percentage on the attack and a bad work on the boards which have weaknessed our work on defense. We reacted in the second half and we became a little bit more solid as a team."

Portugal player Sara Filipe:
"It was a game where we were just not focused during the 40 minutes. In those moments, mainly in the second period, they gained advantage and it was hard to get back in the game. Although, in the second half we improved our game and won the fourth period. We are still looking for our first victory and we have one last chance in Israel."
