La Roche-sur-Yon: A Closer Look

Vendespace is situated in Mouilleron-le-Captif (4,500 inhabitants), a suburb of La Roche-sur-Yon. La Roche-sur-Yon, is the capital city of the department La Vendée, located in western France, only 50 minutes from the closest airport in Nantes and only 3 hours by TGV train from Paris. The city was founded in 1804 by Napoléon. Nowadays La Roche-sur-Yon offers all of the charm of a manageable sized town with many shops, restaurants, cultural places (museum, theatre, cinema, libraries, etc..), stadiums and gyms, schools, university and a lot of other services. In the countryside and close to the seaside, at only 30 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean (Les Sables d'Olonne), and 1h from the theme Park "Le Puy du Fou", this city proposes different activities all along the year like the International Cinema Festival, the Theatre Festival, the Music Festival, national and international sport events and more than 90 different sport activities.
La Vendée is one of the most attractive areas for summer tourism with lots of beaches, harbours, resorts and historical monuments. There are numerous places to visit like Noirmoutier Island with its amazing «Passage du Gois», a submersible road that allows reaching the island only at low tide. Les Sables d'Olonne and Saint Gilles Croix-de-Vie are only two of the beautiful seaside towns of this county where you can enjoy beautiful beaches and nautical activities. Le Puy du Fou is one of the most famous French historical theme parks, awarded by the US Thea Classic Award 2011. La Venise Verte, a typical natural landscape, features a magical maze of tree-lined, duckweed-covered canals called the Green Venice in the Poitevin marsh in the south of the region.
Basketball History Of The Area

Some teams compete in the highest national championships: La Roche Vendée Basket Club (Ligue 2, 2nd women's league), JA Le Poiré-sur-Vie (Nationale 1, 3rd women's league), Vendée Challans Basket Club (Nationale 1, 3rd men's league), Luçon and Les Olonnes (Nationale 2, 4th men's league). In the 1960's and 1970's La Vendéenne was the first club playing in the 1st men's league; in the 1980's, Challans Basket competed in the Korac Cup. Since 1989, on every Easter week-end, La Roche Vendée Basket Club organises an U16 international basketball tournament which gathers the best club teams from Europe and the rest of the world. Many U16 European Championship MVPs and current NBA players took part in this competition.
This land of basketball is proud to have brought up players, who became members of French senior national teams such as Françoise Amiaud (National team in the 1980's and vice-president of the French Basketball Federation since 2005), Emmanuelle Hermouet, Florence Lepron (both EuroBasket Women Champions in 2009) and Aymeric Jeanneau. What is more, Aymeric's brother Yohann Jeanneau is an active FIBA referee.
