Slovenia’s Dream Begins Ebbing Away

9. Myrthe Beld (Netherlands)
Myrthe Beld scored a team-high 19 points for the Netherlands.

The Netherlands drove a dagger through Slovenian hearts in Group C after they claimed a memorable 73-64 home court win to leave the qualification prospects of the visitors hanging by the very finest of threads.

Significantly weakened by the terrible bad luck from a trio of serious injuries to influential players, there was a strong possibility Slovenia might begin to struggle or even implode.

And, with this crushing loss, so it has proved since they now stand on the verge of elimination - a position made even more painful by their wonderful start to the summer which had promised to deliver so much.

Tina Trebec and Sandra Pirsic both weighed in with big double-doubles for their team but it simply wasn't enough against an energetic Netherlands who secured a second win in three games.

It had been just a one-shot game with just under eight minutes remaining in the contest but the Netherlands poured in another 22 points as the clock ticked down to make it another miserable night for Slovenia.

Myrthe Beld and Fieke Ligthart were both impressive for the hosts, the former landing 18 points and the latter more than doubling her previous highest score of the campaign.
