GAME REPORT

30.06.2012
Swiss Hold On To Beat Estonia

13. Karen Twehues (Switzerland)
Karen Twehues led Switzerland with 25 points.

Switzerland used a fast start to see off winless Estonia 69-62 in Group B of the EuroBasket Women Qualification Round.

The hosts raced into a 24-8 lead at the mid-point of the first quarter, powered by 12 points in the first 4:30 from Sarah Kershaw, who had three three-pointers in the run.

And although they soon cooled off and allowed Estonia to claw back some of the lead, they never conceded it, even if they might be concerned at how close the group strugglers came to getting back into the game.

Estonia began the second quarter on an 11-2 run, with three-pointers from Jana Rannaveski, Merike Anderson and Kati Rausberg to make it 32-29 with 6:30 to go until half-time.

But they got no closer, and six straight points from Marielle Giroud had the Swiss comfortably out in front once again before the break.

Switzerland moved 15 points clear, 56-41, on Giroud's jump-host midway through the third quarter, but Estonia had one more rally in them and when Anderson hit a jump-shot 1:33 from the buzzer the lead was down to just two, 63-61.

Giroud and Karen Twehues then responded to hold off the Estonians and seal the win.

Twehues led the Swiss with 25 points while Giroud added 24. Kershaw never added to her 12 early points.

Triin Teppo led Estonia with 18 points while Anderson added 16.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Switzerland vs. Estonia

Estonia coach Jaanus Levkoi:
"The Swiss team is a good team. I think we had a psychological problem because we were not present at the beginning of the game. For us it's a very good experience because it's really a strong group."

Estonia player Merike Anderson:
"We had a good game but we had very bad beginning in the five first minutes of the game. After that, we improved our defence which helped us to get back into the game."

Switzerland coach Milenko Tomic:
"I'm really satisfied because Estonia is a really good team and has a lot of experience, much more than us. This Qualification Round is an amazing experience for us and it forces us to work hard every day to improve our level in order to compete with the best teams."

Switzerland player Karen Twehues:
"we started well and scored most of our attempts. It was really hot today but this was for both teams and I don't want to complain about it."
