Italy held off Latvia down the stretch to take a 60-57 victory in the battle for top spot in Group E of the EuroBasket Women Qualification Round. Italy held a 47-35 lead on Benedetta Bagnara's three-pointer at the start of the fourth quarter, but Latvia quickly began an assault on the lead, with Ieva Krastina's three-pointer making it 48-42 with 7:19 to go. Italy responded and were 55-44 up on two free throws from Giulia Gatti but Latvia came back at them once more and when Liene Jansone nailed a three-pointer with 47 seconds left, the gap was just three, 58-55. Giorgia Sottana made a pair of free throws for Italy before Kristine Karklina hit back to make it 60-57 with 28 seconds left. Sottana missed for Italy to give Latvia a late chance, but Krastina came up empty with a three-point attempt. Sottana led Italy with 18 points, while Raffaella Masciadri and Sabrina Cinili added 10 each. Anete Steinberga led Latvia with 16 points, while Karkina had 12. Italy improve to 4-1 with Latvia at 3-2. |

"Italy is a very good team, with a fast game. They know how to play with the right spaces and they play well one-on-one. Giorgia Sottana made the difference, but Italy is not just her.
