Hungary will have to wait until they host EuroBasket Women 2015 to play in the Final Round after falling at Ukraine 73-66 on Saturday. In a do-or-die battle for next year's EuroBasket in France, Alina Iagupova poured in 23 points for Ukraine as they finished second to Belarus in Qualification Round Group A. Hungary had a dream start with five straight points by Kata Honti lifting them into a 15-8 advantage midway through the opening quarter. When power forward Anna Vajda connected from long range, Hungary's lead grew to 22-14 at the end of the first frame. Ukraine twice pulled level in the second quarter but a Dora Horti jumper with 16 seconds to play in the first half gave the visitors a 38-37 lead at the break. The hosts did go in front in the third quarter but the Hungarians got their noses back in front. Behind 47-44 with 4:11 to play in the third period, though, Ukraine's determination finally paid off. Lyubov Alyoshkina made a lay-up to trim the deficit to one and Tetiana Panchenko made two straight baskets for a 50-47 Ukraine advantage. The contest remained tight until the end but Ukraine held on for a hugely important win. |
